Charcoal wash technique was perfect for this figurative study, mostly in shadow. This is a mixture of charcoal sticks and powder. The velvet shawl detail brought added interest because of the depth of blackness achieved with mere charcoal powder.

Original.  Good story:  Liberty Station Arts District, where my art studio is located, invited me to  go on-air for a local morning talk show to help them promote a Holiday Block Party.  I offered a studio promotion for charcoal portraits.  Sara was visiting from Florida and happened to walk in.  Sparky was Sara's constant company, gentle and lovable.  She saw my other pet portraits and immediately showed me a spectacular family iPhoto.  I was instantly inspired.  And after studying Sparky's eyes and kind demeanor, understand why Sara and family wanted this lasting memory.

Original.  Experimenting with different surfaces.  This is drawn mostly in charcoal and oil paint.  I've taken a magazine article about the behind the scenes filming Pirates of the Caribbean and worked into the background.  It's kind of a fun piece and drawing monkeys are always a holiday !

Original.  Every once and awhile, I have a good giggle accompanying a portrait request.  Would I do a portrait of their son with his puppet.  I immediately imagined a young boy and a marionette.  Or sock puppet. Well, when I saw the photo of a puppet aka muppet with ping ball eyes and a man that looks like Andy Garcia, I thought great !  Charcoal wash portraits are always 14" x 11" but there was a specific request to work 20" x 16", which I must admit, actually looks even more fantastic !

This is one portrait that is a guaranteed smile everytime I look at it.  Thanks Ryan, what a great guy !

Original.  My husband and I enjoy beginning the day with a big cappuccino and a walk to the end of the pier.  It was rare to see a pelican perched on the rail.  It was even more rare for the pelican to sit there and pose for me.  I must have taken a hundred photos.  Stepping closer and closer, she didn't budge.  turn your head to the right, now the left, beak up, beak down.  It was a real moment.

Original.  Commissioned pet portrait.  In front of my studio is an expansive grassy area.  This is popular for the locals and their doggies.  I also have a chance to make lovely new friends.  Such is the story of Jack and Barbara whom I became acquainted with last August when I moved to the ground floor from my 2nd floor space.  They are faithful to playing catch with their very handsome border collie, Bodhi.  What makes Bodhi extraordinary is that he is a dog that helps Veterans overcome PTSD.  Even the most isolated personalities give praise to how Bodhi has been a lifesaver for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
