Original.  Underwater life is a clear and present danger even on the shores of the San Diego beach.  We are lucky enough to live on a street which deadends to the Pacific Ocean. I have actually stood in our living room and watched whales but never seen the fin of my little friend (above).  Regardless, I'm not jumping in the water anytime soon.

Original.  We walk the beach early in the morning. You always see something different.  The LaJolla beach is popular with kayak rentals and scuba divers.  That is why I stopped and took  a ton of pictures of a cute little old man and this row boat  The cute little old man was edited out this time.  Last time, he was included in two paintings and they took forever to sell. I thought this boat deserved to float on its own.  We will see.

Original oil painting.   This is painted from a series of photos I took during a morning walk on the nearby pier.  At first, I kept a distance of about 20 ft.  The sunlight was good and the bird remained still.  I crept closer and closer until I was within 2 ft.  The queen turned her head to the right.  Then the left.  From the series of photos taken that day, I've done three paintings.  That's more than I've painted my husband.  Ha ha ha !

Original.  For me, the shadowed form of bathing beauties in summers canvas wooden chairs has turned into a popular theme.  I've pulled in a few elements from my personal life.  I have always tanned in the canvas beach chair but they are now found mostly in the EU, which is where I saw them again in Central London public parks, in the middle of the city.  You won't see the canvas chairs on a California beach.  But the sky is California.  The sea is Caribbean green.  The sand is Florida sugar sand.  The occupants are the beach boys ...

Original.  Ever notice how life becomes comfortable and you stop trying different things ? I've been painting on canvasses that are similar aspect ratios, often a 4 X 3. Standard size, popular, and common. The above canvas is similar to the digital television aspect ratio or 16 x 9. It's absolutely wonderful for landscapes and that is exactly what I have in mind.  Except a client of mine has asked for a very wide canvas: 58" x 10".  Thank you Mrs. C for making me paint outside my comfort zone !  Now that I have done a few warm-ups (the above) I am totally ready to grow.

Original.  Once in a great while, a painting takes on its own life.   I finished an earlier version of this painting and a dear collector/friend had phoned and said that this was the painting he'd been looking for his son.  My husband and I were out the door to dinner and upon return, PayPal notified me that the painting had been paid.  I assumed it was my collector/friend.  But it was a new collector !   I telephoned my collector/friend and left the decision with him ... adding I would paint another version nearly twice the size.  I must admit, bigger is better !
