Original.  Charcoal pencil on Strathmore paper.  Inspiration for this stunning North American Indian drawing was from brilliant 20thC photographer, Edward Curtis.  The style of her hair suggests she is unmarried, but available !  The hair buns are "squash blossoms." The tribes were a vanishing race so with the help of a $75K grant from J.P. Morgan, Curtis amassed a magnificient collection immortalizing this culture.  The Tewas are a linguistic group of the Pueblo American Indians, they speak Tewa and share the Pueblo culture.  If you are a collector of Southwest Art, this would enhance your collection.  Framed and wired and ready to hang in your living room.  I ship with the assurance of FEDEX.

Original.  This is an interesting technique.  I paint with charcoal powder.  Start with a big brush and mix it with water then block in the shapes.  Some brush strokes remain and others are moved around, or taken away then a charcoal pencil defines and refines.  Signed.  Sprayed with a fixative.  The lineness is Wes Studi, a magnificent Native American.  Studi is a full-blooded Cherokee actor from Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma near Tahlequah, and has won critical acclaim for his portrayal of Native Americans in film.  This particular inspiration is from one of my favorite films, "Dances With Wolves." My story continues as a few months ago, PORTRAITS 4 ALL Fine Arts Studio & Gallery had a show featuring Native Americans.  Apparently the word was out as Native Americans came around to see the show.  Imagine my surprise when a look-alike to Wes Studi walked through the door !  This is a clear favorite of mine but the story goes with the painting and would look lovely in your Library or Living Room.

Original.  Started with bleeding the 400 lb. paper in watercolor. I actually think there is more stand-out value in a simple drawing on stained paper. The grace of this pose and the delicate lace in the 600 year old collar compliments the effect of a little conte crayon and tiny dots of white chalk highlights.  This also makes an amazing portrait as 7x5 inches fits nicely on a fireplace mantle.

Original.  Interesting inspiration.  The National Gallery in London was having an exhibit of 16C artist, Barocci. He's known for his altar pieces and oil paintings.  I was interested in his sketches/drawings.  To see how his paintings evolved was better than the painting itself, in my opinion.  Starting with my sturdy 400 lb. Bristol board, trimming down to 7"x5" sheets, I created my own toned paper with thin ultramarine blue and raw umber washes.  Dried.  Started drawing with a mechanical pencil and so the above is a Barocci inspiration.  There is something clean and innocent about this 600 yr old style.

Number three in series experimenting with watercolor textures on Bristol plate. Original.  Interesting inspiration.  The National Gallery in London was having an exhibit of 16thC artist, Barocci.  He's known for his altar pieces and oil paintings.  I was interested in his mind-bending preparatory drawings.  To see how his paintings evolved was better than the painting itself, in my opinion.  The sheer beauty and grace in his sketching, starting with toned paper (gray) and finishing light sources with one or two lines of white chalk, gently smudged over a brow.  I couldn't travel home to my studio fast enough.  Starting with my sturdy 400 lb. Bristol board, trimming down to 7"x5" sheets, I created my own toned paper with thin ultramarine blue and raw umber washes.  Dried.  Started drawing with a mechanical pencil and so the above is an example inspired from a Master.
